Male Engagement Session: Encouraging Fathers to Take an Active Role in Family Care

As part of the Girls Standing Strong (GSS) Project, Social Development and Research Center (SDRC), with support from Plan International Nepal, conducted Male Engagement Sessions to encourage men and fathers to take a more active role in childcare, household responsibilities, maternal health, and family well-being.

The sessions focused on the message “Harek Bar Khana Char” – eating a variety of nutritious foods regularly and highlighted the importance of adequate nutrition for children and mothers. A practical food demonstration was conducted, where participants learned how to prepare nutritious khichdi using locally available ingredients. Participants also prepared and shared the food with children, creating an opportunity to demonstrate the importance of fathers’ direct involvement in children’s care, feeding, and development.

The sessions also emphasized that childcare is a shared responsibility. Fathers were encouraged to spend quality time with their children, support learning and play, assist with household and childcare activities, and create a safe and caring environment at home. Discussions further highlighted that men’s support is particularly important during pregnancy, including accompanying and supporting mothers for antenatal care (ANC), helping with household work, ensuring nutritious food, providing emotional support, and preparing for safe delivery and newborn care.

The Male Engagement Sessions provided a practical platform for men to reflect on traditional gender roles and understand how their active participation can contribute to healthier families, better child development, improved maternal well-being, and more gender-equitable households.

Through these activities, SDRC and Plan International Nepal continue to promote positive fatherhood and meaningful male engagement as an important part of building supportive families and stronger communities.
